Lingo Pacifica TR-2203 is a terrific talking translator

We found the Lingo Pacifica (TR-2203) easy to use, pocket-sized (about the size of a deck of cards) and full of helpful phrases. The screen was easy to read and was exceptionaly clear for character-based languages such as Japanese or Korean. For some, the buttons will be small. However, you really don't have to type much as most of the features are "one-touch" or just a few keystrokes. Also, typing individual words is painless as each letter "narrows" your words letter by letter. For example, "beautiful" only requires you to type in "beau."
As fun as it is to check the different languange variations for "Good Morning" it is important to point out some drawbacks of the Pacifica. This translator is for casual language use only; the language student will be disappointed in not being able to add words to the dictionary or conjugate verbs. "Have" is in the dictionary but "had" or "having" are not. Also, the Pacifica does not handle "ad hoc" phrases. The phrase "you have a beautiful daughter" would have to be translated word by word and most certainly not come out right.
The sounds spoken from the Pacifica itself are poorer than expected. Some words are very difficult to hear and understand. The sound quality is greatly improved by using the supplied earbuds. Please note that these earbuds are 2.5mm (the same as a cordless phone headset) and your high-end iPod stereo headset will not plug into the Pacifica without a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter (supplied by us or the likes of Radio Shack). We decided to take this to the extreme and plugged in a JBL On Stage II speaker into the Pacafica (by using the adapter). The sound quality was amazing which indicates to us that the on-board speaker is just too small and "thin" sounding. It would also be helpful if the translations could be slowed down a bit (especially Ms. Francais).
